Buying and Selling Gold Coins

There are many different types of gold coins available for purchase in retail stores and jewelry stores. Read on to find out how to distinguish the gold coins that are often used as an investment tool. Royal Canadian Mint Gold, Perth Mint Gold Bar, Rand Refinery Gold Bar, Silver Coins, and Silver Bars are also popular options.

The 1oz variant of Royal Canadian Mint’s gold coin was first issued in 1979 and is recognized as a legal tender in Canada. These Maple Leaf coins like the one pictured on the right are recognized around the world and famous for their superior quality. These coins are made of 99.9% pure gold and are a perfect way to store value effectively.

The Maple Leaf was first introduced in 1979. At that time the only gold bullion coin that was available was the Gold Krugerrand. The Royal Canadian Mint set out to make it the purest coin in the world by making it 24 karats in purity. They became very popular among gold investors and made the Royal Canadian Mint world renown.

The design is breathtaking. The obverse side of the coin features Queen Elizabeth II. Her name appears at the top of the Gold Maple Leaf and denomination and the date of the coin appears at the bottom. The reverse side displays the national symbol of Canada – the Maple Leaf. The reverse of the Gold Maple Leaf states its country of origin, content, purity, and weight. It continues to be a staple choice for investors looking to add to their position with high quality, sovereign backed bullion.

The Krugerrand is a South African gold coin, first minted in 1967 to help market South African gold. The coin, produced by the South African Mint, proved popular and by 1980 the Krugerrand accounted for 90% of the gold coin market. The name itself is a compound of Kruger (the man depicted on the obverse) and Rand, the South African unit of currency. During the 70s and 80s some countries forbade import of the Krugerrand because of a perceived association with the apartheid government of South Africa, which has since been abolished. The Krugerrand today is a popular coin among collectors.
